Martin V. Stewart

Martin "Marty" Stewart, 82, died Christmas morning at home on San Juan Island. His wife June and his four children were by his side when he passed away quietly at home.

Marty and his wife moved to the San Juan Islands in 1990 following retirement from the Air Force. Marty was an Air Force officer for 36 years. He was a pilot during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Marty continued to be an active pilot here on San Juan Island following his retirement, and over the years flew many people to and from the mainland as a community service. He was active in the Presbyterian Church, and often flew the pastors of the church to the islands for Sunday services. The pastors often referred to Marty's plane as the "POB Airline," meaning "Presbyterians on Board."

Marty fought a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

At the present time funeral arrangements are pending. Details and a full obituary will follow in the Jan. 4 edition of the Journal of the San Juan Islands.
